Understanding the Skin’s pH Balance: Why It Matters for Your Skin Health

What Is the Skin’s pH?

The pH scale measures how acidic or alkaline a substance is, ranging from 0 to 14. A pH of 7 is considered neutral. Anything below 7 is acidic, while anything above 7 is alkaline. Healthy skin typically has a slightly acidic pH, usually ranging from 4.5 to 5.5. The pH level of the skin can vary based on a variety of factors such as race, gender, age, and even the season.
This slightly acidic environment is often referred to as the “acid mantle.” It plays a critical role in protecting your skin, helping it maintain moisture, and shielding it from harmful bacteria, pollutants, and irritants.

For example, research comparing individuals with acne vulgaris to a control group with normal skin found that the acne group had an average pH of 6.35. This is relatively higher (more alkaline) than the pH of healthy skin, which is typically around 4.5 to 5.5. It’s believed that this increase in pH could disrupt the skin’s natural barrier, potentially contributing to inflammation and acne breakouts.
Antibacterial activity is most effective at a skin pH of 5.5. When the skin’s pH rises to between 6 and 6.5, there is a shift in the resident bacterial population: the numbers and activity of P. acnes and Staphylococcus aureus increase, while the effectiveness of antimicrobial peptides declines. This suggests that the pH balance might play a role in the development and severity of acne.
Basically, the pH of the cleanser plays a crucial role in altering the skin’s natural balance. A cleanser that is too alkaline can raise the skin’s pH, while a more acidic cleanser might lower it. The change in skin pH is directly related to the pH of the cleanser, and the effect is reversible. However, it means that products can still raise the skin’s pH for a period of time after application before it returns to its natural state. This emphasizes the importance of choosing skincare products that align with the skin’s natural, slightly acidic pH, to minimize disruptions and maintain skin health.
How to Maintain Your Skin’s pH Balance
Maintaining a balanced pH is essential for healthy skin, and there are several ways to choose the right skincare products that help keep your skin within its optimal pH range:
1. Find “pH Balanced” Products
Look for Product Labels: Many skincare products will proudly claim to be “pH balanced” on their packaging. This generally means the product is formulated to match the natural pH of the skin. Some brands provide pH testing results or mention it in their product descriptions as below.

2. Find Products with Acids (AHA, BHA, PHA) and Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C)
When formulating exfoliants like AHA (alpha hydroxy acid), BHA (beta hydroxy acid), PHA (polyhydroxy acid), or Ascorbic Acid, chemists aim to create a low pH environment for optimal function, as these acids are most effective when the pH is around 3-4. 3. Avoid soap-based foaming cleansers
Be cautious of products with high alkalinity, especially soap-based cleansers or bar soaps, which tend to have a pH of 9-10. These can strip your skin of its natural oils and harm the acid mantle, leading to dryness and irritation over time.
To identify soap-based cleansers, look for products that have strong cleansing power and list any combination of fatty acids and bases near the top of the ingredient list.
