But one combination stands out for its effectiveness in maintaining and repairing the skin’s natural barrier: ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids. This powerful trio plays a crucial role in skin health, offering numerous benefits, especially for those dealing with dryness, irritation, or conditions like eczema or atopic dermatitis.

What Are Ceramides, Cholesterol, and Fatty Acids?

The skin consists of three main layers: the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis. The epidermis, which is the outermost layer, can be further broken down into five distinct sublayers. These include the innermost stratum basale, followed by the stratum spinosum, stratum granulosum, stratum lucidum, and the outermost stratum corneum (SC).

Research shows that formulas with a mix of ceramide, cholesterol, and free fatty acids can improve barrier function in models where the lipid barrier has been damaged. Skinceuticals Triple Lipid Restore 2:4:2 cream specifies the percentage of ceramide, cholesterol, and fatty acids as 2%:4%:2%, which are relatively high levels, so I expect it to be effective in nourishing aging skin and improving the skin barrier. However, it is a bit expensive at $155 for 48ml. If you’re just looking to try a ceramide/cholesterol/fatty acid cream for the first time, I recommend starting with Dr. Different 311 Moisturizer. While Dr. Different 311 Moisturizer may not be as effective as Triple Lipid Restore 2:4:2 due to the lower levels of active ingredients, it is more affordable at $46 for 100ml.
